Edinburgh
The capital of Scotland has a fairly identifiable compact centre where most of what any visitor might want can be found.
Edinburgh Castle dominates the city and is home to the Crown Jewels and the Stone of Scone. Leading from it is the Royal Mile with a host of places to visit along the route it takes down hill to Holyrood Palace. Features include St. Giles Cathedral, Mary King's Close, the Scotch Whisky Experience and more.
Head a little distance south and you'll find so much more such as the National Museum or Greyfriars Kirk. To the north are the famous Princes Street and its gardens, the National Gallery, Calton Hill and the Scott Monument.
Beyond the centre you will also find Stockbridge, Arthur's Seat, Dean Village, the Royal Botanic Garden, Royal Yacht Britannia and much more.
Edinburgh can also work well as a base for trips to Roslin, Melrose, East Lothian, Stirling and even the Highlands.
